What is Claude Cowork? How it works, what it costs and how to use it

What is Claude Cowork? It is the part of Claude that does multi-step work for you instead of just answering: it reads and writes files in folders you connect, uses your apps and a browser, and asks before actions that matter. It uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, with no terminal, and comes with every paid Claude plan. Since September 2026 it is merging with chat into one Claude app. When you want systems built around your own files, our Claude Code course for business owners takes it further.

In short

  1. Chat is for thinking with Claude; Cowork is for handing Claude a task and getting files back.
  2. Paid plans only (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise); the desktop app on Mac or Windows is the full experience.
  3. You connect folders, pick how much it may do without asking (Manual or Auto), and describe the result.
  4. Scheduled tasks repeat hourly, daily or weekly, even while your computer sleeps.
  5. It is becoming part of one Claude app; the Code tab stays where it was.

What is Claude Cowork, and what changed in September 2026?

Cowork is Claude working as an agent on everyday office work. Anthropic's own short version: “Chat is for thinking with Claude. Cowork is for delegating to Claude.” (Claude Academy). It started as a research preview in January 2026, became generally available on Mac and Windows in April and reached web and mobile in July (release notes).

On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that “Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude”, rolling out to Pro and Max first, with Team and Free to follow (announcement). What that means for you (help article):

  • If your message box still shows separate “Chat” and “Cowork” options, you don't have the new version yet.
  • Once you have it, you can't switch back; your chats, tasks, projects and settings come with you.
  • The model picker and the “Code” tab are where they were.
  • A few things aren't in the new version yet, such as branching a conversation or searching older Cowork tasks.

What can Claude Cowork do?

It works with Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, PDFs, CSV files and images, uses a built-in browser in a side panel, and splits bigger jobs into parts that run at the same time (product page). With connectors it can use your other apps, and plugins add ready-made skills for your role or company (see our guide to Claude skills). It can also work in your own Google Chrome through the Claude Chrome extension. Typical jobs:

  • Turn a folder of receipts into one expense spreadsheet.
  • Write a first draft of a proposal from your notes and last year's version.
  • Build slides from a report, or a report from several spreadsheets.
  • Research suppliers in the browser and put the results in a table.

How do you use Claude Cowork?

You need a paid plan, and for the full experience the Claude desktop app on Mac or Windows. Based on Anthropic's getting started guide:

Step 1: Open a task

In the older layout, select Cowork in the message box. In the new combined Claude app there is no mode to pick: you just describe the task.

Step 2: Connect only the folder the task needs

“Claude can only read and write files in folders you've connected.” Make a working folder with copies of the files, not your whole Documents folder.

Step 3: Choose how much Claude may do without asking

In the new Claude app you can pick Manual (the default: Claude asks before each action) or Auto (Claude keeps working, with automatic safety checks). The older layout also has a Skip mode, meant only for when you “completely trust every action, connector, file, app, etc. involved in the task.” Start with Manual.

Step 4: Describe the result, review the plan, let it run

Say what you want back and how you'll check it, for example: “One expense sheet with date, supplier, amount and category, and a list of any receipts you couldn't read.” Review Claude's approach, then let it work.

How do scheduled tasks work in Claude Cowork?

Scheduled tasks repeat a job on a timetable, and they are available on all paid plans (help article). In the older layout, click Scheduled in the left sidebar, then New task, and either let Claude set it up or fill in the name, prompt, approval mode and frequency yourself. In the new Claude app, describe the task and how often it should run, answer Claude's questions and click Schedule.

  • Frequency: hourly, daily, weekly, on weekdays, or manually.
  • “Scheduled tasks run remotely, so they run on their cadence even when your computer is asleep or the Claude Desktop app is closed.”
  • A task that needs local files or apps only runs on your computer.

Good first schedule: a Monday-morning summary of last week's sales spreadsheet.

How much does Claude Cowork cost?

Nothing extra: Cowork is included in the paid plans, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, with no separate price. It does use your limits faster. Anthropic says multi-step tasks “use more of your usage than a quick question”, and Auto mode uses more than the other modes. Which plan to pick: see Claude plans compared for small business.

Claude Cowork vs Claude Code: which one do you need?

Both use the same agentic architecture. Cowork is for everyday office work, with no terminal; Anthropic describes Claude Code as “built for developers writing and shipping software”. Business owners who don't code can use Claude Code too, through the Code tab in the desktop app, to build things they keep improving.

Our rule of thumb: a task you hand over and get back is Cowork; a system you build and keep is Claude Code. Start with our guide on how to use Claude Code if you don't code.

Is Claude Cowork safe to use?

It is built to ask first, but it can act on your files, so set it up with care (safety guide):

  • “Cowork requires your explicit permission before permanently deleting any files.”
  • Anthropic advises: “Avoid granting access to local files with sensitive information, like financial documents.”
  • Text on websites or in files can contain hidden instructions (prompt injection); Anthropic says the chance of an attack is “non-zero”, and strongly advises against using the browser for sensitive actions.
  • On Team and Enterprise, Cowork is on by default, and organization owners can turn it off (Team and Enterprise).

Is there a Cowork setup for small businesses?

Yes: the Claude for Small Business plugin adds ready-made workflows for money, sales and admin, connected to tools like QuickBooks and HubSpot. Our guide to Claude for Small Business shows how to turn it on and what it can't do.

What should you try after your first Claude Cowork task?

Hand Cowork the same weekly task three weeks in a row and check the result each time. Then:

  1. Connect the apps the task needs, one at a time: Claude plugins and connectors.
  2. Save the steps you repeat as a skill, so you don't explain them again.
  3. Build something that stays, such as a website or a small tool, with Claude Code. The free course below shows how, without code.

Frequently asked questions about Claude Cowork

What is the difference between Claude and Claude Cowork?

Chat is Claude answering and thinking with you; Cowork is Claude doing a multi-step task for you, like reading files in a folder you connect and handing back finished documents, spreadsheets or slides. Anthropic's short version: “Chat is for thinking with Claude. Cowork is for delegating to Claude.” Since September 16, 2026, the two are merging into one Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max first, so in the new version you just ask and Claude decides whether you need a quick answer or a task. Handing off tasks needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise).

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. Cowork is available on paid Claude plans only: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. There is no separate price; it is included in those plans, but multi-step tasks use more of your usage limit than a quick question.

Does Claude Cowork work on Windows?

Yes. Since April 2026, Cowork has been generally available on macOS and Windows through the Claude desktop app, which Anthropic calls the full Cowork experience.

Can I use Cowork in the browser or on my phone?

Since July 2026, Cowork also works on web and mobile (in beta) on Pro, Max and Team plans, and on Enterprise where an admin has turned it on. Since October 6, 2026, new tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud. Local files, local connectors, browser use and computer use still need the desktop app.

Does my computer need to be on for scheduled tasks?

Usually not. Anthropic says scheduled tasks run remotely, even when your computer is asleep or the desktop app is closed. A task that needs local files or apps only runs on your computer.

Can I switch back to the separate Chat and Cowork options?

No. Once your account has the new combined Claude experience, you can't switch back. Your chats, tasks, projects and settings move over with you.
