Claude skills for business owners: what they are and how to make your own

Claude skills are folders of written instructions, sometimes with scripts, that Claude loads only when a task matches, so a job like your weekly report or your product descriptions is done the same way every time. Anthropic includes skills for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, and you can make your own just by describing the job to Claude. To build whole systems around your own procedures, see our Claude Code course for business owners.

What changed in this guide
  • : Corrected: Anthropic's document skills do load in Claude Code when you sign in with your claude.ai account (v2.1.273 or later), not with an API key. Clarified sharing on individual vs Team and Enterprise plans.
  • : First version. Facts and quotes checked twice on Anthropic's help center, documentation and engineering blog.

In short

  1. A skill is a written procedure (a SKILL.md file in a folder) that Claude loads when the task matches.
  2. Anthropic's own skills create Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files automatically.
  3. Turn skills on under Customize, Skills; code execution must be on.
  4. Make your own by asking Claude to use the skill-creator skill.
  5. Install only skills you trust, and read them first: a skill can run scripts.

What are Claude skills?

In Anthropic's words: “Skills are directories containing instructions, scripts, and resources that Claude dynamically loads to handle specific tasks. Each skill has a SKILL.md file” (skills overview). Claude only reads a skill when it decides the skill is relevant, which keeps your conversations from filling up with instructions you don't need right now (what are skills).

Anthropic introduced skills, also called Agent Skills, on October 16, 2025, and published them as an open standard in December 2025 (engineering post). For a business, a skill is the written-down version of “how we do this here”.

Which Anthropic skills come built in?

“Anthropic skills: pre-built skills for creating Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and PDF documents that activate automatically when relevant.” Ask for a price list in Excel or a proposal as a Word file, and Claude uses them without you doing anything. Another Anthropic skill, skill-creator, helps you build your own (see below). In Claude Code, these skills load automatically when you sign in with your claude.ai account (Claude Code v2.1.273 or later); they don't load if you use an API key.

Who can use skills, and where?

Anthropic's pages disagree on the Free plan. The help center says: “Skills are available for users on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.” The product documentation says: “Skills are available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.” On a Free account, check whether Customize, Skills appears.

  • Code execution must be on: “This feature requires code execution to be enabled.” It is under Settings, Capabilities, as Code execution and file creation; on Team and Enterprise, an owner turns it on for the organization.
  • Where they work: the Claude app on the web and desktop, Cowork and Claude Code; on the API they are in beta.

How do you turn on and add skills in Claude?

From Anthropic's using skills article:

Step 1: Open Customize, then Skills

Go to Customize, Skills, and toggle individual skills on or off as needed.

Step 2: Find more in the Discover tab

Open the Discover tab in Customize, Skills to find skills you can add, including ones from Anthropic and partners. Anthropic's directory also lists connectors and plugins. This is the closest thing to a Claude skills marketplace.

Step 3: Or upload a skill you have as a ZIP

Package the skill folder as a ZIP, click +, then Create skill, then Upload a skill, and upload the ZIP. The SKILL.md file must sit inside the skill's folder in the ZIP, not loose at the top level. The folder name must match the skill's name.

How do you create your own Claude skills?

The easy way is to let Claude write it. Anthropic's advice: “ask it to use the skill-creator skill, then edit what it produces.” Skill-creator runs your skill on test prompts you agree on, shows you the results and helps you revise it (how to create a skill). A prompt to start with:

Prompt for Claude
Use the skill-creator skill. I want a skill called weekly-sales-summary. Every Monday I give you last week's sales spreadsheet. You write a one-page summary: total sales, the 3 best sellers, anything unusual compared with the week before, and how you calculated the totals. Ask me what you need to know, then show me the skill before saving it.
  • Pick a task you repeat every week and already know how to check.
  • Write the steps and the checks, not your company history; keep SKILL.md under 500 lines.
  • “Don't put API keys, passwords, or other credentials in a script or anywhere else in the skill: everyone you share the skill with receives its files.”
  • When the skill gets something wrong, fix the skill, not just that one result.

Skills vs projects, plugins and connectors

FeatureWhat it is (Anthropic's words)Use it for
Skill“Task-specific procedures that Claude loads when a request matches”A job you repeat: a report, a reply, a check
Project instructions or CLAUDE.md“Background knowledge that's always loaded in that project's chats”Who you are, your tone, your rules
Plugin“Packages that contain several skills together with connectors, commands, and agents”A ready-made set someone else built
Connector“Connections that let Claude reach external services and data”Access to an app like Gmail or QuickBooks

Rule of thumb from Anthropic: instructions for every conversation go in your preferences or project instructions, because a skill loads only when a task matches. More on bundles and app connections in our guide to Claude plugins and connectors.

How do Claude Code skills work?

In Claude Code a skill is the same idea in a folder on your computer: personal skills in ~/.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md, project skills in .claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md. You run one with a slash command, like /weekly-sales-summary, or Claude loads it when the task matches (Claude Code docs). Our guide on how to use Claude Code if you don't code shows how to turn a finished task into a skill in three steps.

Are skills safe to install?

Your own skills are as safe as what you write in them. Skills from others need care, because a skill can include scripts. Anthropic names the biggest risks as prompt injection and data exfiltration. It also says that skills someone shares with you, or that you upload yourself, “aren't reviewed by Anthropic, so open the skill and read its SKILL.md and files before you turn it on.” (skills overview). Anthropic warns that a malicious skill can make Claude use tools or run code in ways that don't match its stated purpose, and could leak your data.

What are the best Claude skills for a small business?

The best skills are your own procedures. These are our suggestions for a first five, not a list from Anthropic:

  • Weekly sales summary from your spreadsheet, with the same checks every time.
  • Product descriptions in your tone, with the details you always include.
  • Customer reply drafts for your most common questions, with your policies.
  • Quote or price check before an estimate goes out.
  • Monthly invoice review that lists what is overdue and drafts reminders for you to send.

If you use QuickBooks, HubSpot or similar tools, Anthropic's ready-made skills for small businesses come inside a plugin: see Claude for Small Business.

What should you do after your first Claude skill?

Use your first skill on real work for two weeks and fix it each time Claude gets something wrong. Then take the next steps in this order:

  1. A second skill for the next task you repeat every week.
  2. Office tasks in Cowork. Skills also work in Cowork, Claude's mode for multi-step office work: what Claude Cowork is.
  3. Check your plan before you share skills with a team: Claude plans for small business.

Frequently asked questions about Claude skills

Are Claude skills free?

There is no separate charge for skills. Anthropic's help center says skills are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, while its product documentation lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise; on a Free account, check Customize, Skills. Skills need code execution turned on.

Where is the Claude skills marketplace?

In the Claude app, open the Discover tab in Customize, Skills to find skills you can add, including ones from Anthropic and partners. Anthropic's directory also lists connectors and plugins. Install only skills from sources you trust.

Do skills work in Claude Code?

Yes. In Claude Code a skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file in your personal or project skills folder, and you run it with a slash command or let Claude load it when the task matches. If you sign in with your claude.ai account, the skills you turned on in Claude, including Anthropic's document skills, sync there automatically; with an API key they don't.

What is the difference between a skill and a CLAUDE.md file?

A CLAUDE.md file or project instructions load in every session: put your business basics there. A skill loads only when a task matches: put a procedure there, like how you write a weekly report.

Can I share a skill with my team?

On Team and Enterprise plans you can share a skill with colleagues, and owners can publish it to the whole organization. On individual plans, skills stay private to your account. Don't put passwords or keys in a skill: everyone you share it with receives its files.
